Really fun and easy growing kit. I kept it in my kitchen and the mushrooms were ready to be used within 2 weeks. Unfortunately I went on vacation before using them and they were mostly dead by the time I got back. Great gift for a gardener of any age.UPDATE: I got another mushroom farm thanks to Back to the Roots. It was a resounding success this time and I’m currently working on growing a second batch. Here are some of the things I did differently that helped:1. Using the mister. This new farm is the “original” size and included a mister spray bottle that the mini version didn’t have. If you get the mini farm I would recommend getting a spray bottle to make watering the mushrooms easier/better.2. Water more often. I kept the farm and the mister bottle with it in the kitchen. Every time me or my husband walked by we would spray the block to keep it moist.3. Scrape the block better and cut the hole bigger. I used a knife to scrape the block, I left some white/unscrapped spots though and it seems that the mushrooms sprouted from these sections (the scrapped areas seemed to allow water to penetrate better and is probably what triggers the shrooms to sprout). Also, I cut the X bigger then I did last time because more surface area is better.4. Harvest at the right time. I followed the recommendations and harvested the mushrooms when the tops started turning white and the edges are brown. I put them in the frig until I was ready to use them.5. Save the block to get a second (and hopefully a third?) harvest. Also, the mushrooms tasted really good. I marinated them in teriyaki sauce for a couple minutes and then sauteed them. I ate them by itself and the rest was added to the top of a burger. YUM! 🙂

Clear instructions in package but also links to online videos. First harvest is complete and if it doesn’t say you can get two harvests. Currently attempting my second harvest. First harvest was more than I expected. Very pleased.

The product works as advertised. If the weather is warm though, your mushrooms might go from sprouts to full sized in 24 hours, so keep an eye on them! I got 4 batches out of mine by following the regular instructions, after that there was nothing for two weeks, so I got creative.I took the brick out of the shrink wrapped bag and turned it over, put it in a new plastic bag and started the process again as if it was day 1. 14 days later I got a first batch again! I may repeat this on the sides next, unless I get tired of eating them!As for the mushrooms themselves, they’re more delicate than regular button mushrooms. Sauté them quickly in a pan, if they go too long, they get rubbery. You should also trim the stems, they tend to be rubbery too.

The pink-ness was surprising; the primordial buds were almost crimson. This is great for schools, kids, fun. My problem is that the growth time varies. Temperature is not the only factor (day-light time? Zodiac?) – in Winter it is notoriously slow. It works best in a large, clear plastic tub as “humid chamber” (or an empty aquarium), but then the cardboard sleeve goes soggy; if you take the cardboard away, then the mushrooms grow also inside the bag (where light reaches). One option would be to use black plastic instead of transparent (but then one cannot show the mycelium as good). I may craft a “plastic coffin”, because I plan to use this over and over again.

My teenagers spend all of their time in our dark and dank basement-this due to quarantine restrictions and lack of anything to do. After a few months my boys started to look like mushrooms, flaccid in posture with brownish / grey skin tones. Based on my teenagers current state, the conditions in my basement for mushroom growth seems optimal. Especially since my sons were slowly turning into human fungi- I figured why not try to grow some mushroom kits for a food source. I got each family member their own kit. Results to follow

This product has been so much fun to watch! I followed the directions, exactly as written, and the mushrooms began growing within 3-4 days. I will say that I did soak them for close to 10 hours before putting them back in the box to grow and I believe this helped a ton. I also kept the box inside by a window with the blinds closed in order for them to get indirect sunlight. The mushrooms grew tremendously for almost a week before they started to shrink so I clipped them to cook with and they were DELICIOUS! This was such a fun product and process to watch. I am now in the process of trying to get a second batch of shrooms from the same box— fingers crossed!

This miniature mushroom farm in a box is the easiest thing I have ever grown. I followed the directions as listed and mushrooms started sprouting within days, and then doubling in size quickly. Cool purposeful and educational opportunity at home for the kiddos and I.I cooked the mushrooms in a pan with a little bit of oil and garlic. I put it together with sautéed onions, ground sausage, and egg noodles with butter, which was delicious! The mushrooms have a mild flavor and almost like a meaty texture. When cooked they look a lot like thinly sliced and cooked chicken. This may be a way for me to incorporate mushrooms into my children’s diet. ?

I ordered these pink oyster mushrooms in the little boxed up kit just to try them. I love mushrooms but usually just buy the brown mushrooms at the store. This seemed fun, and, if I get two batches, very affordable. The directions are easy to follow and geared for kids: Cut an X in the plastic and keep moist. I put them on the sink in front of a window. The mushrooms grew quickly and got impressively large. I picked them when it seemed like I’d have a meal sized portion.I sautéed them in a bit of olive oil/butter and added a couple of garlic cloves. The mushrooms lost their pink tint during cooking. Following super easy online recipes, I let them crisp up a bit before flipping. The bits of garlic also got crispy. The whole thing took less than 10 minutes. They were heavenly! Both the texture and taste were different than brown mushrooms. Better! I would definitely recommend this for kids of all ages and anyone who likes to add a little panache to their menus. It’s a terrific project during the Covid lockdown, too.

Was a great project over the holidays , it was a gift for my 10 year old , he loved the whole experience from start to finish, the instructions were easy to follow and the results were impressive, he says he will make a pizza with them following a recipe card that came with the kit . He will definitely be trying other kits and wants to join a city garden this summer. Wonderful experience

My first batch grew much quicker than expected. By day 3 I already had mushrooms. I harvested them on the sixth day. Absolutely delicious. I wish this was a bigger brick because I could eat these by the pound. I am currently on my THIRD batch growing from the SAME side. I haven’t bothered flipping the brick yet, I just rescratch the substrate after harvest, soak and go on spraying. I also keep the box in a plant terrarium from Ikea with a cup of water in it to keep the air moist. The air conditioner makes the air indoors dry and the brick dries out faster. Moisture is a mushrooms best friend.
